What is the carboNZero programme all about?

In a nutshell, the carboNZero programme is about climate change. Climate change is something we all have to think about, from surfing the web to driving our cars, we are all duty bound to make choices that take into consideration the adverse affects of our actions.

But how do you know if what you’re doing is helping or not, and why does it even matter?

It always matters. At eco.love we know that not only do individuals have a responsibility towards the earth, but so do the companies that many of us rely on everyday. By leading the way as the first carboNZero^CertTM winery in the world, we are setting the standard for a new way of doing things, in the hopes that all of us can be a friend to our planet, rather than a wasteful tenant.

How did we become a carboNZero^CertTM certified company?

The carboNZero programme, run by Landcare Research New Zealand, helped us. Landcare provides both individuals and organizations with the tools they need to measure and reduce their impact on climate change. How? By following the 3 M’s!

Measure – to calculate our CO2 emissions

Manage –  to reduce our CO2 emissions

Mitigate – to offset our CO2 emissions

Measure: We measured our energy use from daily operations such as; lighting, heating, and machinery operations. The use of natural gas, electricity and fuel all emit CO2, through the burning of carbon based fossil fuels.

Management: Once everything had been measured we created an emissions profile, and focused on areas where we could reduce our energy consumption. Wherever possible we directed our efforts towards finding energy efficient alternatives, allowing us to save on electricity and fuel.

Mitigation: This is where we ‘offset’ the effect of CO2 emissions that our company releases into the atmosphere. In order to do this we purchased carbon credits from a verified scheme.

These steps allow eco.love Wines the privilege of displaying the carboNZero label on all of our products.

The carboNZero programme strives to change the pattern of wasteful manufacturing processes by reducing the amounts of Carbon dioxide emissions released into the atmosphere. The program is committed to finding more sustainable methods of energy consumption and usage, thus reducing the possibility of extreme weather phenomena, such as flooding and droughts caused by climate change.
